History
Jörg von Halsbach built the church in 1478, positioning it at a crossroads—a location that inspired its original name am Kreuz, meaning “at the Cross.” The structure served the parish as both spiritual center and burial ground for centuries.
Between 1620 and beyond, the interior underwent comprehensive Baroque renovation, fundamentally reshaping the worship space while respecting its Gothic skeleton.
What you see
Externally, unadorned brickwork and a commanding bell tower convey Gothic plainness. The nave preserves its original Gothic vault—a soaring reminder of the 15th-century design.
Inside, Baroque interventions dominate the visual field. A Crucifix attributed to Hans Leinberger survives from the Gothic period. The tombs display Mannerist refinement: the banker Gietz’s monument and Hans Rottenhammer’s Apparition of the Virgin to St. Augustine exemplify Renaissance-era sophistication. Fragments of older frescoes linger in shadowed corners, bridging epochs.
