History
Founded in the early 18th century as a modest suburban village, Krasnoye Selo housed a paper mill by 1764 near the road to St. Petersburg. The 19th century brought dramatic transformation: wealthy nobles built summer dachas and villas throughout the district, establishing it as the capital’s premier vacation destination.
In 1884, aviation pioneer Alexander Mozhaysky conducted early tests of his monoplane here, achieving a power-assisted take-off of 60 to 100 feet. Late imperial Russia made the village even more prominent by hosting annual military manoeuvres presided over by the Emperor himself.
On 25 July 1914, Tsar Nicholas II convened his council of ministers at Krasnoye Selo and resolved to support Serbia against Austria—a decision that sealed Russia’s entry into the First World War. The town received official town status in 1925. During World War II, German forces occupied it from September 1941 until January 1944. In 1973, Krasnoye Selo came under the jurisdiction of Leningrad (St. Petersburg’s Soviet name).
