Kellerei Tramin Winery

A cooperative winery founded in 1989, now housed in an award-winning 2010 headquarters that merges modernist design with a historic wine-producing landscape.

At a glance

Kellerei Tramin represents a contemporary approach to heritage winemaking in South Tyrol. The cooperative brings together nearly 300 members cultivating approximately 245 hectares. Its striking new building, designed by Werner Tscholl, integrates glass, wood, iron and concrete into a structure that honors both tradition and innovation.

History

Priest Christian Schrott founded the winery in 1989, establishing a cooperative model rooted in the region’s viticultural tradition. The cooperative grew steadily, eventually requiring expanded facilities. In 2010, a transformative new headquarters was inaugurated, built on the foundation of the original winery building and expanding the cooperative’s capacity to serve its growing membership and visitor base.

What you see

Architect Werner Tscholl’s design balances transparency and shadow through strategic use of glass and solid materials. The main structure unfolds into functional zones for production and hospitality, with two extended green arms extending from the core—one housing the wine shop, the other the tasting room. The building creates deliberate contrasts with its landscape setting while maintaining visual harmony. The project has garnered multiple architectural awards for its integration of contemporary design with regional context.

Cultural significance

Kellerei Tramin exemplifies the evolution of South Tyrolean wine cooperatives into modern enterprises without abandoning their roots. The winery serves as both a working production facility and a cultural ambassador for the region’s viticulture. Its architecture demonstrates how contemporary design can enhance rather than overshadow heritage sites.
