History
The station was officially completed in 1972 as a replacement for Katowice’s historic train terminus. By the early 21st century, the original building had deteriorated significantly after three decades of use, prompting a major redevelopment initiative.
In July 2009, the Polish government contracted Spanish construction firm Neinver to redesign the site as an integrated transportation hub and commercial center. Ground was broken in May 2010. Phase one focused on the main station building itself, with a temporary structure accommodating trains during demolition and reconstruction of the original hall. Phase two involved systematic reconstruction of the platforms.
The new main hall and underground bus station opened in late 2012. Summer 2013 marked completion of the entire complex, including the adjoining Galeria Katowicka shopping mall on Szewczyk Square.
