Overview
The Kandt House on the slope of Nyarugenge hill is the oldest modern building in Rwanda: the 1908 residence of Richard Kandt, the physician-explorer who served as imperial Germany’s first Resident of Rwanda and founded Kigali as his administrative post. The modest hipped-roof house of fired brick and verandahs is the seed from which the capital of a thousand hills grew.
History
Kandt, who had earlier located a source of the Nile at the Rukarara, governed with an ethnographer’s curiosity recorded in his book Caput Nili; the Belgian takeover of 1916 ended German rule but kept his town. The house passed through colonial and ministerial uses, surviving the 1994 genocide intact, and reopened as the Kandt House Museum – presenting Rwandan life before, during, and after colonization, with a wing on the German period and Kigali’s founding.
Architecture and Design
The single-storey residence adapts German domestic form to the tropics – thick brick walls, encircling verandah, and high roof for the rains – using materials fired and hewn on site. Period photographs inside show the house alone on the bare hill where a metropolis of two million now spreads.
Cultural significance
The house documents the colonial encounter that reshaped Rwanda and the urban origin of one of Africa’s fastest-transforming capitals; its museum role within Rwanda’s national memory institutions complements the genocide memorial in narrating the country’s full arc.
Visiting today
Open daily with guided tours in English and French; the live snake house in the garden delights children. The old commercial quarter and central mosque of Nyamirambo are a short ride away.
