Kaliningrad Regional Amber Museum
A fortress tower on the edge of Lake Verkhneye now holds the world’s densest concentration of worked and fossilized amber, some 14,000 pieces gathered under one roof.

The museum sits inside a reconstructed 19th-century fortification in central Kaliningrad. Opened in 1979, it functions as a branch of the Kaliningrad Regional Historical and Art Museum. Its collection spans raw amber, archaeological finds, and contemporary jewelry design.
History
The building began life as a defensive tower erected by Karl Friedrich Emil zu Dohna-Schlobitten during the Napoleonic Wars. Restoration of the historical complex started in 1969. Ten years of work followed. The first stage of the museum finally opened on 29 December 1979. Its location was no accident: over 90 percent of the world’s known amber deposits lie nearby, around the town of Yantarnoye.
What you see
Twenty-eight show-rooms unfold across three floors, covering roughly 1,000 square metres. Five thematic sections trace amber from geological origin to modern art. Dioramas recreate the ancient “amber forest” and the open-pit mining of blue earth. Cases hold more than a thousand specimens with inclusions, among them Mesozoic plants, insects, and a small lizard often singled out by visitors. The world’s second-largest amber piece is displayed alongside a 1.2-metre vase called The Abundance. A four-kilogram sampler anchors the raw-material section.
Cultural significance
The museum holds the only surviving fragments of the original Amber Room decor, recreated by artists including G. Khozatsky and V. Ertsev. Their work revived carving techniques used by 17th- and 18th-century masters. A dedicated section covers the Staatliche Bernstein-Manufaktur Königsberg, the German state amber enterprise that operated in the region until 1945. Since 2004 the museum has hosted the International Biennial Alatyr, and since 2012 an all-Russian jewelry exhibition, drawing partners from Japan to France. In 2017 its artisans’ works traveled to the Louvre for an international heritage fair.
