History
Josef Sudek (1896–1976) moved to Úvoz 24 in 1959 and made this address his home until his death. His photographic archive was gradually transferred to the MDA between 1978 and 1988. The apartment opened to the public as a gallery in 1995, preserving it as both residence and creative workspace. Sudek maintained a separate studio at Na Újezdu 28, where his sister Božena assisted him and managed the darkroom operations.
What you see
The flat itself functions as an artifact. Its rooms accumulated paintings, frames, goblets, boxes and photographic equipment—the material culture of an artist’s life. This accretion of objects shaped the atmosphere where Sudek conceived his major photographic series.
Cultural significance
The apartment was a gathering place for Prague’s artistic intelligentsia, including poet Jaroslav Seifert and painter Jan Zrzavý. Within these walls Sudek created renowned works from his Aviatic Remembrances, Easter Remembrances, Labyrinths and Glass Labyrinths series. The space documents the intersection of domestic life and artistic production in modernist Prague.
