Overview
The Turin International Book Fair is Italy’s premier annual publishing event, attracting publishers, authors, readers and cultural institutions from over 130 countries. Held each May at the vast Lingotto Fiere complex in southern Turin, the fair serves simultaneously as a trade platform for the publishing industry and a public festival celebrating reading and literature. Attendance regularly exceeds 150,000 visitors over five days, placing it among the largest book fairs in the world by public footfall.
History
The fair was established in 1988 with the mission of promoting books and reading culture across Italy and the broader Mediterranean region. Over its first decade, it grew from a regional publishing trade show into a major international platform, aided by Turin’s strong editorial heritage as home to publishers including Einaudi and UTET. In 1999 the event moved to the renovated Lingotto Fiere, the repurposed former Fiat factory redesigned by Renzo Piano, which provided large-scale infrastructure for international exhibitors and a diverse public programme. The fair has since focused on a rotating annual theme, inviting guest nations and spotlighting under-represented literary traditions.
What you see
The Lingotto Fiere pavilions host thousands of stands belonging to Italian and international publishers, literary agents and cultural organisations. The central halls contain bookshops, signing areas and dedicated children’s reading spaces. Stages and auditoriums distributed throughout the venue host author talks, panel discussions, award ceremonies and school programmes running in parallel with the trade floor. The surrounding Lingotto complex, with its famous rooftop test track and Pinacoteca Agnelli gallery, adds architectural depth to any visit.
Cultural significance
The Turin fair occupies a central position in Italian literary life: major publishing announcements, literary prizes and translation rights deals are routinely concluded here. Its annual thematic focus, honouring a guest country or cultural tradition, has introduced Italian audiences to literatures from Latin America, Africa, the Arab world and beyond, reinforcing Turin’s identity as a cosmopolitan city of culture and knowledge.
