The Centre emerged from a proposal presented at the UNESCO General Conference in New Delhi in 1956. Three years later, Rome was chosen as its permanent home. Initially located near Piazza San Francesco di Paola, close to the Central Institute for Restoration, ICCROM eventually relocated to the monumental San Michele a Ripa complex, where it remains today.
