Humayun’s Tomb
The first great Mughal mausoleum in India, built by the widow of Emperor Humayun, this architectural masterpiece blends Persian and Indian traditions and inspired the design of the Taj Mahal.
At a glance
Humayun’s Tomb stands in eastern New Delhi as one of the best preserved Mughal monuments. Despite its funerary purpose, the structure resembles a luxurious palace more than a conventional tomb, reflecting the grandeur of Mughal imperial culture.
History
The mausoleum was commissioned by Hamida Banu Begum, the widow of Emperor Humayun, who initiated construction in 1565—nine years after her husband’s death. The project was completed in 1572. As the first example of Mughal architecture in India, Humayun’s Tomb established architectural precedents that would resonate through subsequent Mughal building projects, most notably the Taj Mahal, constructed a century later.
Architecturally, the tomb serves as a crucial bridge between the tomb of Tamerlane at the Mausoleum of Gur and the later mausoleum of Shah Jahan, positioning it as a defining moment in the evolution of Indo-Islamic funerary architecture.
What you see
The design synthesizes Persian and Indian architectural vocabularies. Persian influence appears in the arched alcoves, corridors, and distinctive high double dome. Indian traditions shaped the kiosks that punctuate the structure, creating a pyramidal silhouette when viewed from a distance.
Cultural significance
Humayun’s Tomb marks a watershed in Indian architectural history. Its pioneering use of the garden-tomb formula and its sophisticated geometric planning established a template that became central to Mughal palatial and funerary design. The monument’s enduring influence on later builders, particularly those who designed the Taj Mahal, underscores its importance to the Mughal architectural canon.
