Erta Ale
A chain of shield volcanoes in Ethiopia’s Afar Depression, home to one of the world’s rare permanent lava lakes, where molten basalt churns at 1200°C beneath an ever-shifting crust.
At a glance
Erta Ale is a volcanic chain spanning 2,350 square kilometres across the Afar Triangle, extending from the northern salt plains to Lake Afrera in the south. The chain comprises seven major shield volcanoes, with the primary Erta Ale standing 613 metres high and featuring an active lava lake—one of only four such observable phenomena worldwide.
History
Geological evidence shows this depression was once occupied by the Red Sea between 200,000 and 80,000 years ago, during the Upper Pleistocene. Coral and saline sediments found at elevations ranging from minus 30 to plus 90 metres attest to this ancient marine past. The basaltic crust visible today resulted from the Earth’s tectonic expansion in this region, driven by the divergence of the Arab and African plates along the Afar fault system.
What you see
The volcanic chain displays six named shield volcanoes arranged along the main fault axis, with Gada Ale (287 metres), Alu-Dala Filla (613 metres), Borale Ale (668 metres), Hayli Gubbi (521 metres), and Ale Bagu (1,031 metres, positioned off the fault line). The principal Erta Ale volcano maintains a permanent lava lake where basaltic fragments float like icebergs across the molten surface. Periodic cooling forms a black crust, which the sustained mantle heat continually breaks and liquefies anew.
Cultural significance
Erta Ale represents a rare window into terrestrial magmatism. The tectonic fault permits magma escape at the surface—a process normally confined to oceanic ridges deep beneath the sea—making it a site of extraordinary scientific value. As one of four locations worldwide where persistent lava lakes can be directly observed, Erta Ale offers unparalleled insight into planetary geodynamics and volcanic behaviour.

Practical information
The region is entirely desert with no visitor facilities on-site. Access requires specialist travel arrangements and expert guides familiar with the Afar Depression’s extreme conditions and terrain. Visitors should consult with established tour operators before attempting to reach the volcano.
Getting there
Erta Ale lies in Ethiopia’s remote Afar region. Access typically requires traveling overland from the nearest towns with adequate preparation, supplies, and local guides. Check current travel advisories for Ethiopia before planning your visit.
