A wooden church built in 1720 on the site of a predecessor destroyed by fire, Holy Trinity Church stands as a masterwork of Carpathian ecclesiastical architecture and craft. Its sculptural iconostasis and painted icons exemplify the artistic vision of early 18th-century Ukrainian makers.
At a glance
Three wooden naves support this vernacular structure, complemented by a brick sacristy. An iconostasis of carved linden wood, inlaid with approximately 50 painted icons, forms the church’s spiritual and visual centerpiece. The building carries plaques marking its status as an architectural monument.
History
Holy Trinity Church rose in 1720 to replace an earlier church consumed by fire in 1717. The iconostasis was created in the early 18th century by masters of the Zhovkva Painting and Carving School under Ivan Rutkovych, with carving executed by Ignatiy Stobenskyi. Following decades of use, the iconostasis underwent restoration between 1978 and 1979. Today the church serves the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
What you see
The church comprises three wooden naves—a traditional arrangement for Ukrainian Orthodox and Greek Catholic sacred spaces. A brick sacristy provides contrast to the timber construction. The carved and painted iconostasis dominates the interior, its linden-wood framework housing approximately 50 icons in the style and technique of the Zhovkva school.
Cultural significance
Holy Trinity Church represents a peak moment in Carpathian wooden ecclesiastical design. The collaboration between Rutkovych’s painting workshop and Stobenskyi’s sculptural carving reflects the integration of visual and decorative arts in Ukrainian sacred practice. In June 2013, UNESCO recognized the church as part of the Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region, grouping it with 15 other timber churches spanning Poland and Ukraine.
