Holašovice (XVIII–XIX sec.): il villaggio intatto del “barocco contadino”
Intorno a un grande prato verde si affacciano fattorie dalle facciate dipinte e dai frontoni ondulati: è il “barocco contadino” della Boemia meridionale, uno stile rurale unico. Holašovice è un villaggio quasi immutato dall’Ottocento, esempio raro di insediamento agricolo centroeuropeo tradizionale.

Holašovice is a small village in South Bohemia that has preserved, almost intact, a traditional Central European farming settlement. Around a large rectangular green stand farmsteads built in the 18th and 19th centuries in the regional style known as South Bohemian Folk Baroque (selské baroko): modest houses given curving, decorated gables in plaster. Its exceptional completeness and the survival of this rural style led to its inscription by UNESCO in 1998.

History
Holašovice was settled in the Middle Ages and, after the depopulation of the Thirty Years’ War and a plague, was resettled, keeping its old layout of farms around a green. In the 18th and especially the 19th century the farmhouses were given new fronts in the South Bohemian Folk Baroque style, an ornamental rural manner developed by local masons who adapted grand Baroque forms to humble village houses.
The village changed little thereafter. After the upheavals of the 20th century it was carefully conserved, and its rare survival as a complete traditional farming settlement earned World Heritage status.
What you see
The heart of the village is the green, with a chapel and pond, framed on all sides by gabled farmhouses painted in white, ochre and soft colours. Each gable curves and steps in its own way, the plasterwork picked out in detail; barns and gates complete each farmstead.
The effect is of a whole village built to one gentle aesthetic, a living museum of rural Baroque.
