Hirkan National Park
A vast protected forest spanning the Talysh Mountains and Lankaran Lowland, Hirkan preserves one of Azerbaijan’s largest unbroken woodland ecosystems and shelters rare endemic species in humid subtropical and temperate rainforest.

Established in 2004 and expanded in 2008, Hirkan covers 40,358 hectares of mountainous terrain on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. Nearly all of it—99%—remains forested and undisturbed by human settlement or grazing, making it a sanctuary for biodiversity in the South Caucasus.
History
The park was formally established on February 9, 2004, superseding the Hirkan State Reserve that had previously protected the area. A presidential decree enlarged it on April 23, 2008, expanding its territory from 29,760 hectares to 40,358 hectares to strengthen conservation efforts across the region.
What you see
Hirkan comprises deciduous broadleaf forests—both subtropical lowland and cooler montane varieties—rising from the Lankaran Lowland into the Talysh Mountains. The landscape shifts with elevation, creating distinct ecological zones within a single contiguous forest rarely fragmented by roads or clearings.
Cultural significance
The park belongs to the Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests ecoregion, a globally significant rainforest ecosystem. It protects many plant and animal species found nowhere else, making it crucial for regional and international biodiversity conservation efforts along the southern Caspian coast.
