Overview

At Hima the incense road’s caravans watered for seven thousand years – and carved: 34 rock-art sites stack hunters, ibex, camel trains, and battle lines beside inscriptions in every script Arabia used, from Musnad to early Arabic – a stone guestbook of the peninsula’s travelling history. The wells of Bir Hima still hold water; UNESCO inscribed the area in 2021.

History

Najran’s oasis – Christian Arabia’s martyr city of 523, the Quran’s People of the Ditch by tradition – anchored routes from Yemen’s frankincense groves north; armies (a 7th-century BC Sabaean campaign’s record among the panels) and pilgrims followed traders. The carvings’ sequence tracks climate, fauna, and faiths across the millennia to the Islamic centuries’ prayers.

Architecture and Design

Sandstone outcrops serve as galleries – panels metres wide at Abar Hima and Jabal Arnan; the ancient wells’ steyned shafts dot the wadi. Desert varnish dates layers by tone, oldest darkest.

Cultural significance

Hima joins Arabia’s rock-art constellation (with Hail’s 2015 listing) as the inscription-rich pole – epigraphy’s field museum – and stakes Najran’s deep history in the kingdom’s opening heritage map.

Visiting today

Permits and guides arrange through Najran’s tourism office; mornings light the panels. Najran’s mud-brick palaces and Al-Ukhdud’s ruins complete the oasis circuit.

Getting there

Najran’s airport connects Riyadh and Jeddah; Hima lies 90 minutes north by the Wadi ad-Dawasir road.
