Hand of the Desert

A monumental hand emerges from the Atacama Desert 75 kilometres south of Antofagasta, an arresting sculpture that invites each visitor to assign its own meaning.

At a glance

Standing 11 metres tall on a reinforced concrete base at 1,100 metres above sea level, Hand of the Desert rises from the arid landscape near the Pan American Highway. The sculpture commands attention from passing travellers and has become a recognized landmark along Route 5.

History

Chilean sculptor Mario Irarráz abal designed and built the work, which was inaugurated on 28 March 1992. Construction was financed by contributions from the Pro Antofagasta Corporation, which continues to maintain the sculpture today through regular cleaning operations.

What you see

A single, oversized hand emerges from the desert floor, rendered in concrete and designed to be visible from the highway. The sculpture’s stark form contrasts sharply with the surrounding landscape, drawing the eye across vast distances. Graffiti, a persistent presence, marks the surface regularly.

Cultural significance

Irarráz abal deliberately left the work open to interpretation. Some visitors read it as the city bidding farewell to passing travellers. Others perceive it as a memorial to victims of injustice and torture during Chile’s military dictatorship from 1973 to 1990. This ambiguity has allowed the hand to resonate with multiple audiences and meanings.
