History

The Governorate of Rome called a tender for the construction of a school building in 1930, in response to the expansion of the area between the Lungotevere, via Flaminia and via Cesare Fracassini. Work began on 29 May 1931 and was completed on 26 October 1932. The school was inaugurated on 28 October 1932 in an official ceremony attended by the then Provveditore agli Studi Francesco Colimei and by the head of government Benito Mussolini. It was named after Guido Alessi, a gold medal for military valour, born in Rome on 23 May 1890 and killed on the Montello hill on 19 June 1918.

When it opened, the building housed 26 elementary classes and 4 classes of a female vocational school. During the Second World War, after the bombing of Rome, parts of the school were requisitioned and used to house displaced families. The building returned to school use after the war.

What you see

The photographs show a symmetrical front on via Flaminia with a central entrance block set back from the side wings. The central portal is marked by three vertical bands of glazing and is reached by a staircase. The side wings have smooth surfaces with uniform windows. Above the entrance the inscription reads “SCUOLA ELEMENTARE GUIDO ALESSI”. A large white multi-storey volume is visible from the street corner, and a billboard appears in one of the photographs. The building’s decorative treatment is described by a school history as emphasising the hierarchy and uses of the interior spaces.
