The Gothic House is a small neo-Gothic garden pavilion forming part of the Pałac Czartoryskich estates. Constructed between 1801 and 1809, it was designed by Chrystian Piotr Aigner as an expansion of the nearby Temple of the Sibyl, displaying objects both inside and outside its walls.
History
The pavilion rose on the ruins of a Baroque garden structure destroyed by Russian troops during the 1794 conflicts. Its patron, Izabela Czartoryska, commissioned Aigner to create a cabinet for her collection of historic architectural fragments.
The stones embedded in the Gothic House came from across Europe—Italy, Spain, and Poland—each piece salvaged for her lapidarium. After the November Uprising’s failure in 1831, Russian forces confiscated the Czartoryska family collections and removed or destroyed most of the embedded stones. In 1869, Russian Minister of Education Dmitry Tolstoy ordered the removal of all Polish cultural property from the site.

The building is modest in scale but rich in historical recycling. Its masonry combines newly laid stone with reused architectural fragments—pieces of columns, carved blocks, and decorative elements sourced from significant buildings across three countries. The exterior functioned as a display surface as much as the interior, making the pavilion itself a kind of curated exhibition.
Cultural significance
The Gothic House represents an early instance of heritage conservation through architectural collage. Izabela Czartoryska’s lapidarium reflected Enlightenment collecting practices and a romantic fascination with historical fragments. Though much was lost to Russian confiscation, the pavilion survives as testimony to both aristocratic patronage and cultural destruction.
