Galleria Matteotti
A steel-and-glass shopping arcade built in 1912, the Galleria Matteotti remains one of Mestre’s finest examples of Liberty style architecture and a vital commercial and cultural hub.
At a glance
The Galleria Matteotti is a covered shopping passage that unites two buildings constructed by the Toniolo family. Its original flooring and roof survive intact, preserving the aesthetic character of early-twentieth-century Venetian modernism.
History
The gallery opened on 27 October 1912, the same day Mestre inaugurated its municipal aqueduct. The Toniolo family commissioned the structure, designed by Giorgio Francesconi, joining their two properties with a steel-and-glass passage in distinctly Parisian style. The Toniolo Theater, designed by the same architect, opened months later on 30 August 1913 with a performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto. Angeloni became the first shop to open within the gallery in 1927, at number 2.
What you see
The arcade exemplifies Liberty design through its steel framework and glazed roof, allowing natural light to flood the passage. Its floor and ceiling remain original installations, rare survivals of the period in central Mestre. The architectural vocabulary reflects ambitious early-twentieth-century aspirations to modernize the city beyond mere commercial function.
Cultural significance
The Galleria Matteotti stands as a landmark of Mestre’s transformation from small town to modern urban center. Today it hosts the “Galleria in Galleria” project, a cultural and educational initiative designed to reclaim the arcade as a space for public meeting and memory, celebrating the city’s architectural heritage through exhibitions and community engagement.
