History
Constructed in 1890, Fort bij De Kwakel was built as part of Amsterdam’s defensive network during the late 19th century. The fort occupied a key position within the linie Kudelstaart–Uithoorn, flanked by Fort bij Kudelstaart to the west and Fort aan de Drecht and Fort bij Uithoorn to the east.
During periods without military occupation, a designated caretaker lived in dedicated residential quarters on the property, a common arrangement for 19th-century Dutch fortifications.

The main fort building contains 18 rooms arranged for military and administrative functions. Beyond the primary structure, the site retains the caretaker’s house, a modest residential building that documents the everyday logistics of fort maintenance.
Several outbuildings have been adapted as private residences, reflecting the site’s gradual transition from active military use to heritage preservation.

The fort exemplifies late 19th-century Dutch military architecture and engineering. As part of the Stelling van Amsterdam—a UNESCO-recognized ring of 42 forts and waterworks—it represents a unique approach to urban defense that prioritized strategic inundation alongside conventional fortification.
