Origin and Development
Ferrara Expo (formerly Ferrara Fiere e Congressi), located at Viale dell’Industria, is the main trade fair and exhibition hub of the Este city. The complex was developed progressively from the 1990s to match the agricultural, industrial and cultural vocation of the Emilia-Romagna territory — a region with one of Italy’s highest concentrations of quality fairs and congresses.
Architecture and Post-2012 Renewal
The venue’s architecture is characterised by large modular metallic spans and interconnected pavilions — a strictly functional approach that maximises flexibility for diverse event formats. A pivotal moment in the site’s history came after the devastating 2012 Emilia earthquake: the entire complex underwent rigorous seismic upgrading and structural rehabilitation, emerging improved in safety, energy efficiency and external aesthetics. Today it extends across more than 25,000 square metres of covered exhibition space across six main interconnected halls, complemented by conference rooms and outdoor plazas.
Global Capital of Restoration
Ferrara Expo’s cultural significance rests above all on the Salone Internazionale del Restauro — the world’s oldest and most important trade fair dedicated to the conservation, restoration and valorisation of cultural and environmental heritage, established in 1991. Each year the event transforms Ferrara into the global capital of heritage conservation, gathering ministries, superintendencies, specialist firms and researchers. The programme includes exhibitions, live restoration demonstrations, academic conferences and technology showcases. The venue also hosts RemTech Expo, focused on environmental remediation and sustainability.
