Falaknuma Palace stands on a 13-hectare hillock in the Falaknuma district, five kilometres south of Charminar. Built by Nawab Sir Viqar-ul-Umra, Prime Minister of Hyderabad state and uncle to the sixth Nizam, the palace was completed in 1893 as the city’s tallest structure. Originally held by the Paigah family, it later passed to the Nizam of Hyderabad before becoming part of the Taj Group hotel chain following a 2010 renovation.
History
Nawab Sir Viqar-ul-Umra commissioned the palace during a period of architectural ambition in Hyderabad state. As Prime Minister and a close relation to the ruling Nizam, he possessed both wealth and influence to undertake such a grand project. The palace’s name—Falak-numa, meaning “Like the Sky” or “Mirror of Sky” in Urdu—reflects the aspirations of its patron. Upon completion in 1893, it held the distinction of being Hyderabad’s tallest building, a symbol of the family’s status.
