History
The site was originally reserved for military purposes before gradually transitioning to exhibition use. One military building survives on the grounds. The Canadian National Exhibition, from which the district takes its name, has become one of the largest and most successful fairs of its kind in North America. The site’s built heritage spans from the 1700s to the present day, reflecting layers of civic, provincial, and national significance.
What you see
The district houses exhibit, trade, and banquet centres alongside dedicated theatre and music buildings. Five structures were designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1988: the Fire Hall/Police Station, Government Building, Horticulture Building, Music Building, and Press Building. The grounds also feature the Coliseum, which hosts concerts and major events, and the Bandshell for outdoor performances. The site balances heritage preservation with contemporary development.
Cultural significance
The Canadian National Exhibition is central to Toronto’s identity. During its annual run, the fair draws visitors with agricultural displays, food, arts and crafts, government and trade exhibitions, a midway of rides and games, music concerts, and the Canadian International Air Show over Lake Ontario. In autumn, the Coliseum hosts the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Exhibition Place remains an important venue for the city’s civic and cultural life.
