Elizabetes iela 33

Just around the corner from Albert Street, an earlier note in Eisenstein’s decorated Riga.

At a glance

Elizabetes iela 33 is an Art Nouveau apartment building of 1901 in central Riga, attributed to Mikhail Eisenstein. It stands on Elizabeth Street, a short walk from the more famous Albert Street, and forms part of the cluster of Eisenstein facades that draws visitors to this corner of the city. Built at the very start of his most active years, it is a protected Latvian cultural monument within Riga’s UNESCO-listed historic centre.

History

Elizabeth Street is one of the main avenues of central Riga, and in the boom years around 1900 it filled with grand apartment buildings. Mikhail Eisenstein built several Art Nouveau houses on Elizabeth Street — the best documented at number 10 — and number 33, dated 1901, is generally attributed to him among the earliest.

A civil engineer who became Riga’s most theatrical Art Nouveau designer, Eisenstein worked in the city between 1901 and 1906. His Elizabeth Street and Albert Street facades, only a block or two apart, are usually visited together as a single Art Nouveau quarter.

The building is a protected monument and lies within the World Heritage historic centre of Riga.

What you see

The facade carries the decorative, ornament-rich manner of Eisenstein’s early work, the apartment front turned into a stage for Art Nouveau relief and detail. It belongs to the “eclectic” phase of Riga’s Art Nouveau, where ornament dominates the design.

Because it sits on a busy street rather than a quiet showpiece road, the building rewards the visitor who looks up: the richness is concentrated on the upper storeys, above the everyday life of the pavement.

Practical information

  • The building is residential; the facade is admired from the street.
  • Combine with Albert Street, a couple of minutes’ walk away.
  • The Riga Art Nouveau Museum is nearby at Alberta iela 12.
