History
Long the working-class and immigrant quarter inside the old walls — once notorious as the “Barri Xinès” — El Raval was transformed from the 1990s by deliberate cultural investment, cutting the Rambla del Raval through the dense fabric and dropping the MACBA into its centre. The result is a neighbourhood layered with medieval lanes, modern art and constant street creativity.
What you see
The MACBA’s gleaming Meier facade contrasts with the gritty streets around it. Walk the lanes and the contemporary tour is on the walls — murals, stencils and the painted metal shutters that turn closed shops into canvases, like the corner above. Botero’s rotund bronze cat lounges on the Rambla del Raval.
