At a glance

A few steps off Eger’s main street, on a lane of rusticated house fronts, a stone tablet is set into the wall beside a tall brown door. It records that between 1930 and 1944 this house was the home of Eger’s organised workers and of the Social Democratic Party, and that the Friends of Nature group met here too. Those two dates are the whole story: the party was legal in Hungary right up to the German occupation of March 1944, and then it was not.

What you see

The door is the point of the picture as much as the tablet. It is a narrow arched opening in a wall of heavy horizontal rustication, with a fanlight of iron scrollwork above and, in the door itself, a glazed panel guarded by a sunburst of twisted iron bars. The plaque hangs to the right at eye height, a plain rectangle of pale stone, eight short lines, no wreath, no name of whoever put it up. Above the frame of the photograph a carved panel runs along the top of the ground floor; the same rustication and the same arched openings continue up the lane, where the next bay is a shopfront.

What we do not know

Who set the plaque, and when. There is no date on it and no dedicating body, and it is not in the published list of Eger’s memorial tablets that we were able to consult. Nor could we establish, from any documentary source, which house number the lane gives it — the street map says 2, and that is the only authority we have for it. What went on in the house between those two dates — meetings, a library, a choir, the Sunday walks of the Friends of Nature — is the kind of thing that survives in local memory long after it leaves the archive.
