Dominion Public Building
An Art Deco landmark that anchored Halifax’s civic life as its original central post office, now restored as a federally recognized heritage office building.
At a glance
This four-story Art Deco structure, completed in 1936, commanded Halifax’s skyline as the city’s tallest building at the time. Designed to consolidate postal and government services, it survives today as a testament to interwar institutional architecture and meticulous heritage restoration.
History
The Dominion Public Building opened in 1936 as Halifax’s central post office and housed multiple government offices. A four-story addition was constructed to the north in 1962 using compatible materials. In the early 1990s, Canada Post transferred ownership to Public Works Canada, which undertook major interior renovations to convert the building to general office use. Between 2008 and 2009, extensive conservation work addressed the tower’s sandstone exterior and steel frame, including removal and restoration of the façade and installation of a new copper dome replicating the original.
What you see
The building’s defining features are its stone construction and Art Deco vocabulary. Most striking are the large stone seahorses positioned at roof level and in the main lobby—distinctive maritime emblems befitting a port city. Original brass postal wickets remain visible, while the lobby preserves its marble floors and a dedication to Edward VIII. During 1990s renovations, a glass atrium was installed over the former light court spanning floors four to seven, increasing functional floor space.
Cultural significance
The Dominion Public Building represents Halifax’s civic ambitions during the interwar period. Though subsequently surpassed in height, it remains an icon of early-twentieth-century institutional design and a symbol of the city’s postal and administrative heritage. Its designation as a federally recognized heritage building reflects its architectural and historical importance.
