Benworth-Chapman Apartments and Chapman Cottages
Two residential complexes in Salt Lake City that trace their origins to the Mission Revival aesthetics of the late 1920s and the entrepreneurial vision of their successive owners.
At a glance
The Benworth-Chapman Apartments and Chapman Cottages represent two complementary residential developments built over thirteen years. The first structure, originally called Benworth Apartments, was completed in 1927 in the Mission Revival style. The second, Chapman Cottages, followed between 1937 and 1940. Both properties remain documented examples of mid-twentieth-century residential architecture in Utah’s capital.
History
George Bowles & Sons constructed the Benworth Apartments in 1927. Benjamin L. Farnsworth acquired the building that same year and moved into it with his wife Alice and some of their children, sharing the space with tenants. The property changed hands again in 1933, passing to Zions Bank, which held it until 1937. That year, Clarissa G. Chapman purchased the building and renamed it Chapman Apartments. Chapman Cottages was then built between 1937 and 1940, expanding the residential footprint under Chapman’s ownership.
What you see
Benworth-Chapman Apartments employs Mission Revival design, a style that borrows from Spanish colonial ecclesiastical architecture with rounded arches, stucco walls, and decorative tile work. The cottages represent the residential vernacular of the late 1930s. Together, the two buildings document the evolution of Salt Lake City’s apartment living during the interwar and early Depression eras.
Cultural significance
The complex illustrates patterns of property ownership and residential development in early twentieth-century Salt Lake City. The involvement of Zions Bank—a major regional financial institution—underscores the economic currents of the 1930s. Both structures reflect the domestic aspirations and architectural tastes of their era.
