Daursky Nature Reserve
A vast protected steppe landscape in southern Siberia, spanning nearly 223,000 hectares across dry grasslands and wetlands that form part of the transnational “Landscapes of Dauria” World Heritage Site.

The Daursky Nature Reserve protects one of Siberia’s most ecologically significant ecosystems: the dry steppes and seasonal wetlands of the Dauria region. Established as a strict nature reserve, it adjoins Mongolia’s Dornod Mongol Biosphere Reserve, creating a vast cross-border conservation area of nearly 8.7 million hectares.
History
Founded in 1987, the reserve was created to safeguard the distinctive dry steppe habitat and seasonal lake systems of South Siberia. Its designation reflected growing international recognition of the Dauria landscape’s ecological importance, leading to its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Landscapes of Dauria,” which encompasses both the Russian reserve and its Mongolian counterpart.

The reserve consists of a core protected area of approximately 49,764 hectares divided into nine separate plots, surrounded by a buffer zone of roughly 173,201 hectares. Within the buffer zone lie the Torey Lakes—two significant water bodies named Barun-Torey and Zun-Torey—which provide critical habitat for migratory birds and other wildlife in this otherwise arid landscape.
