Established in 1945 as Poland rebuilt itself after war, the theatre quickly became a cultural anchor for the region. Between 1973 and 1988, Polish actress and stage director Alina Obidniak served as intendant, a role she reprised in 2000. Obidniak’s tenure proved transformative: she invited prominent theatre directors to work in Jelenia Góra, notably bringing Krystian Lupa to stage his directorial debut with Witkacy’s Dainty Shapes and Hairy Apes in 1978. Under her leadership, the theatre toured productions across Europe and South America, establishing an international presence. In 1983, the theatre co-organised an early Festival of Street Theatre, cementing its role as an experimental and community-focused institution.
