The Cortile del Maglio occupies a forty-by-forty-metre square within a former military complex. History
The site originated in the late 1500s as part of Borgo Dora’s Military Arsenal, housing the city’s first powder factory and refinery. By the end of the 18th century, after Savoy acquisition, Colonel Antonio Quaglia redesigned the complex. A devastating 1852 explosion nearly destroyed the courtyard and damaged neighbouring houses, prompting Vittorio Emanuele II to relocate the Royal Powder Factory away from the city centre.
The Arsenal was repurposed for artillery production and repair. Military engineers began constructing the neo-medieval Arsenal building with portico and turret in 1867. Operations continued until 1982, when the Municipality transferred part of the complex to the Youth Missionary Service (SERMING), established in 1964 by Ernesto Oliviero.

Inclined metal trees support the expansive roof, creating a distinctive contemporary canopy above the historic space.
