SOSNOWIEC, POLAND · 1904–1911
Church of St. Thomas the Apostle

A Gothic Revival parish church built in early twentieth-century Sosnowiec, notable for its basilica-form layout and later addition of contemporary towers.

At a glance

This brick church belongs to the deanery of St. Thomas the Apostle and stands in the Pogoń district. Its design balances historical Gothic Revival aesthetics with modern architectural interventions, creating a layered visual identity across more than a century.

History

Constructed between 1904 and 1911, the Church of St. Thomas was designed by architect Józef Pomian-Pomianowski in the Gothic Revival style. Nearly a century later, the church underwent significant modification when two contemporary openwork towers were added to the façade in 2004–2007, a project undertaken under the direction of parish priest Fr. Jan Szkoc and designed by Ewa and Tomasz Taczewski.

What you see

The church follows a Latin cross plan with an extensive presbytery and three naves in basilica configuration. Its brick construction displays varied body articulation. The interior retains primarily neo-Gothic furnishings, though a wooden carved main altar with Art Deco features commands the intersection of nave and transept. The paired openwork towers beside the main façade represent the most visible twentieth-century addition.

Cultural significance

The church embodies the religious and architectural aspirations of early industrial-era Sosnowiec. Its evolution—from early twentieth-century Revival design to contemporary tower additions—reflects changing attitudes toward heritage conservation and parish vitality.
