History
The church was built to plans by architects Carl Roesner and Vojtěch Ignác Ullmann. Work proceeded over nine years, with decoration overseen by František Sequens and Josef Matyáš Trenkwald, supported by Czech and Austrian artists. The consecration on 18 October 1863 deliberately coincided with the millennium anniversary of Saints Cyril and Methodius’s arrival in Bohemian lands. A baptismal chapel received its final art nouveau decoration in 1905.

The basilica rises with a highly elevated main nave flanked by two lower aisles. Twin towers punctuate the façade. The interior plan unfolds from an entrance hall through three naves to a presbytery, where a semicircular apse sits between two chapels positioned beneath the towers. Late 19th-century ornament dominates the scheme; the baptismal chapel’s art nouveau flourishes contrast subtly with the Romanesque framework.
Cultural significance
The church embodies Prague’s 19th-century expansion and the Czech national revival. Its scale and symbolic dedication to the apostles of the Slavic peoples reinforced Catholic and Czech identity during the Austro-Hungarian period. As an architectural landmark of historicism, it preserves the aesthetic and technical ambitions of mid-Victorian church design in Central Europe.
