History
Padua grew quickly between the wars, and the city planned new residential quarters to house the expansion. The San Giuseppe district on the south-western side was one of them, and like the planned quarters of the period it was given its own parish as a social anchor. The Sacra Famiglia was raised to serve it, its construction running through the second half of the 1930s and its inauguration falling in 1939. Work on the complex continued in stages into the post-war decades.
The church belongs to the restrained ecclesiastical building of the late 1930s: not the stripped monumentality of the regime’s civic architecture, but a plainer, brick-bound manner that reached for dignity through proportion and a single strong image rather than ornament. The name of its architect is not recorded in the public heritage catalogues consulted here.
What you see
The front is a tall gabled screen of warm brick over a stone-faced base, reached by a broad flight of steps. Vertical rows of narrow round-arched windows climb the flanks of the facade, drawing the eye upward. At the centre, filling the gable, is the circular relief that gives the church its face: the Holy Family carved within a deep stone roundel, a plain cross set on the ridge above.
The effect is frontal and calm. There is no tower competing with the gable; the whole composition is read at once from the square below, the roundel doing the work that a rose window or a mosaic would do on an older church.

- Active parish church; opening hours follow the liturgical calendar.
- Dress modestly, as for any working church.
- The facade and relief are best seen in late-afternoon light from the forecourt.
Getting there
The church stands in the San Giuseppe quarter, a short bus ride south-west of Padua’s historic centre and the railway station. The forecourt and facade are visible from the street at any time.
