Chatkal Range
A 225-kilometre mountain range in the Western Tian Shan, crowned by pointed peaks exceeding 4,500 metres and anchoring the north-west border of the Ferghana Valley.

The Chatkal Range stretches 225 km (140 mi) in length and reaches up to 30 km (19 mi) in width. Its highest elevations cluster in the north-east, where Avletim peak rises to 4,503 m (14,774 ft). Northern slopes are steep and short; southern slopes descend more gently toward the river valleys below.
History
The Chatkal Range departs from the Talas Range to its north and spreads south-west toward the right bank of the Angren River. Its geological history is recorded in the composition of its axial line, formed from limestone of the Lower Carboniferous and Upper Devonian periods.

Pointed peaks dominate the range, with elevations between 4,300 and 4,500 metres. Seven significant mountain passes traverse the range: Avletim (3,447 m), Shaar (3,809 m), Semiz-Bel (3,570 m), Chanach (3,401 m), Tush-Atu (3,595 m), Chapchyma (2,841 m), and Chaykyldy (3,264 m). The range is composed primarily of limestone, granite, and schist.

The Chatkal Range forms a natural boundary that defines the geography of Central Asia’s Ferghana Valley, one of the region’s most significant cultural and agricultural centres. Its passes have historically facilitated movement and trade across the mountain barrier.
