Some sources attribute the design to a joint effort between Belcher and Arthur Beresford Pite, his partner in practice. The two were close friends who admired each other’s work. A pupil of Belcher’s claimed that Pite’s energy and personality had “very strongly” influenced Belcher’s approach to the building. The precise extent of Pite’s contribution, however, has never been satisfactorily established.
