A working winery housed in an architectural sculpture: master Arnaldo Pomodoro’s copper “carapace” dome rises between Montefalco and Bevagna, merging art, wine, and earth.

At a glance

Castelbuono is a contemporary wine estate designed by sculptor and architect Arnaldo Pomodoro. The Lunelli family has operated the property since 2001. The cellar building itself functions as both functional structure and monumental artwork, making a visit inseparable from viewing the sculpture that contains it.

History

The Lunelli family acquired the estate in 2001, commissioning master Arnaldo Pomodoro—a longtime family friend—to design the cellar complex. Pomodoro approached the project as an artist first, creating a building that transcends conventional winery architecture and becomes an extension of his larger sculptural practice.

What you see

The cellar’s most distinctive feature is its unmistakable “carapace” shape, resembling a turtle shell. A large copper dome crowns the structure, its surface intentionally marked with deep cracks that evoke the furrows of cultivated earth. The interplay of material, form, and intentional imperfection creates a dialogue between architecture and sculpture.

Cultural significance

Castelbuono exemplifies how contemporary design can honor both tradition and innovation in wine country. The estate demonstrates Pomodoro’s belief that artistic vision belongs not in isolation but integrated into lived experience. Working and living within a Pomodoro sculpture offers visitors a rare immersion in the artist’s worldview.
