Casinò Municipale di San Pellegrino Terme
Squadrelli finished the Casino in 1907 and gave San Pellegrino a richly decorated Liberty interior — Mazzucotelli’s ironwork, gilded stucco and a gaming hall built for an age that believed in spectacle.
At a glance
Facing the Grand Hotel across the Brembo, the Casino Municipale completes San Pellegrino’s Liberty ensemble. Romolo Squadrelli designed it between 1904 and 1906, and it opened in July 1907 as a Kursaal — gaming rooms and ballroom for the spa’s guests. Gaming ended in 1946; the restored building now houses a QC Terme wellness centre and opens to visitors in the summer season.

History
A spa of San Pellegrino’s ambition needed somewhere for its guests to spend the evening. The Casino, or Kursaal, answered with gaming tables and a ballroom under one roof. Squadrelli, who had just built the Grand Hotel opposite, designed it as the hotel’s companion piece.
The building opened in July 1907. Alessandro Mazzucotelli supplied the wrought-iron pennon and lamp-holders — the same hand behind the Grand Hotel Regina in Salsomaggiore — while a painted frieze with a “flying stag” motif is attributed to Francesco Malerba, the reliefs to Bernasconi and the sculpture to Vedani. Gambling ended in 1946, and the Casino’s fortunes followed those of the spa.
A careful restoration returned the building to use; it now houses a QC Terme wellness centre and hosts concerts and cultural events, opening for guided visits in summer.
