Cà Pesaro Palace

A grand palazzo on the Grand Canal housing Venice’s International Gallery of Modern Art, with masterworks by Klimt, Kandinsky, Chagall and pivotal Italian modernists.

At a glance

Cà Pesaro is a civic museum in the Santa Croce district, positioned prominently on the Grand Canal between Palazzo Coccina Giunti Foscarini Giovannelli and Palazzo Correggio. The palace opened to the public in 1710 and now holds one of Italy’s most significant collections of modern and contemporary art across multiple floors.

History

The palazzo became a public gallery in 1710. Today it operates under the stewardship of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, making its collections digitally accessible through partnerships including Google Arts & Culture, which has catalogued fifty high-resolution images of key works.

What you see

The International Gallery of Modern Art occupies the first and second floors, displaying paintings and drawings alongside sculptural works. The grand staircase leading to the gallery entrance features a cast of Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker. The third floor houses the Oriental Art Museum of Venice within the same building.

The sculpture collection includes significant works by Adolfo Wildt, Arturo Martini and Medardo Rosso, whose Madame X and Ecce Puer represent essential examples of modernist form.

Cultural significance

The museum’s collection spans European and Italian modernism. Highlights include Gustav Klimt’s Judith II, Wassily Kandinsky’s Zig Zag, Marc Chagall’s The Rabbi of Vitebsk, and Paul Bonnard’s Nude in the Mirror. Italian representation includes works by Emilio Vedova, Felice Carena, Virgilio Guidi, De Chirico, Boccioni and Sironi. The collection reflects artistic developments from the early twentieth century through contemporary practice.
