Buseoksa Temple
A Buddhist temple founded by the scholar-monk Uisang in 676, Buseoksa stands near Mt. Bonghwang as a monument to Korean Huayan Buddhism and home to one of the nation’s oldest wooden structures.

Buseoksa Temple takes its name—meaning “Temple of the Floating Stone”—from a legendary boulder said to hover above the ground. The complex preserves rare architecture from the Goryeo era, including the Muryangsujeon, the second oldest standing wooden building in South Korea.
History
Uisang, a prominent scholar-monk, founded Buseoksa in 676 during the reign of Munmu of Silla. Through his teachings, the Korean Huayan school flourished here; Uisang became known as the respected scholar of Buseok, and the school itself adopted the temple’s name.
Major reconstruction occurred during the Goryeo period. In 1372, the great monk Won-eung re-established numerous annexes under King Gongmin’s patronage. The main hall, Muryangsujeon, was reconstructed in 1376 and remains standing today.
What you see
The temple’s most significant structure is the Muryangsujeon, the principal hall positioned at the highest level of the complex. Within it stands an image of Amitabha Buddha. This wooden building exemplifies Goryeo-era craftsmanship and survives as a rare example of medieval Korean temple architecture.
Several other structures from the Goryeo era persist on the grounds, creating a layered historical landscape that reflects centuries of Buddhist practice and architectural evolution.
Cultural significance
Buseoksa represents a pivotal center in the development of Korean Buddhism. Uisang’s propagation of Huayan philosophy established the temple as an intellectual and spiritual hub. The survival of its Goryeo-period buildings makes it an exceptional repository of medieval Korean religious architecture.
