Brixton Academy

A South London concert hall transformed from a 1929 cinema into one of Britain’s most significant music venues, hosting landmark performances and live recordings for nearly four decades.

At a glance

Brixton Academy is a mid-sized concert venue in Lambeth, South London. Originally built as the Astoria Variety Cinema, it has operated under various sponsorship names, currently known as O2 Academy Brixton. The venue has hosted over 50 live albums and won the NME Best Venue award 12 times since 1994.

History

The building opened in 1929 as a cinema. In 1972 it was converted into a discotheque, then reborn as a concert hall in 1983. Ownership passed to the Academy Music Group, which operates it as part of its larger music venue network. In December 2022, a crowd crush at the door resulted in two deaths and serious injuries to others. The venue closed for safety review and reopened on 19 April 2024 after meeting council licensing conditions.

What you see

The venue retains the architectural character of its cinema heritage while configured for live performance. Its mid-sized capacity makes it intimate enough for artist connection yet substantial enough for significant touring acts.

Cultural significance

Brixton Academy ranks among London’s leading music venues. The Smiths performed their final concert here in December 1986. Leftfield’s June 1996 performance set a decibel record for a live gig at 137 dB. Madonna’s 2000 concert reached an online audience of 9 million, marking early significant live-streaming of a major performance. The venue’s consistent hosting of live album recordings has made it instrumental in documenting contemporary music history.
