Bioluminescent Bay

VIEQUES, PUERTO RICO

Bioluminescent Bay

A natural wonder where dinoflagellates create electric-blue light with every movement of the water, earning this bay recognition as the finest bioluminescent ecosystem in the United States.

At a glance

Also known as Puerto Mosquito or "The Bio Bay," this protected marine environment glows with an otherworldly luminescence caused by the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense. Listed as a national natural landmark—one of only five in Puerto Rico—the bay creates trails of neon blue light whenever the water is disturbed.

History

The bay has long been recognized as a rare and exceptional natural phenomenon. Its designation as a national natural landmark reflects the scientific and ecological importance of this bioluminescent ecosystem, which remains largely undisturbed by modern development.

What you see

Red mangrove trees ring the water’s edge, their root systems integral to the bay’s ecosystem. The water itself is notably cool and deep, with a small canal connecting to the ocean. When disturbed—whether by hand, paddle, or swimming motion—the dinoflagellates ignite in brilliant blue light, creating an ethereal display against the darkness.

Cultural significance

The Bioluminescent Bay represents one of Earth’s most extraordinary biological phenomena. The convergence of specific environmental conditions—sheltered waters, minimal human interference, particular temperature and depth characteristics, and the presence of mangrove forests—creates an irreplaceable natural laboratory. This unique ecosystem attracts scientists and visitors drawn to witness one of nature’s most magical displays.
