St. Paul architects Cederberg and Van Kirk designed the building in 1916 as a showcase for opera prima donna Beatrice Gjertsen Bessesen. After its initial run as an opera venue, the building was repurposed as The Rivoli motion picture theater, operating from 1922 to 1975. It later served as the Rivoli Mini-Mall in 1977. Today the Bessesen Building is home to the Freeborn County Arts Initiative and is being converted into a regional arts and wellness center.

The façade displays French Renaissance styling, while the second and third floor apartments contain decorative elements spanning two aesthetics. Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau details include terra cotta fireplaces, an art glass skylight, and stained glass windows. First-level historical features have been compromised over time.
