History
The basilica was originally constructed in the sixteenth century but underwent major transformation during the eighteenth century. Architect Mario Gioffredo conceived the restoration as a monumental neoclassical temple, reimagining the pre-existing structure in the classical idiom. The sacristy, an eighteenth-century work by Niccolò Tagliacozzi Canal, reflects this period’s architectural ambitions. Since October 2017, the basilica has hosted contemporary exhibitions, including “The Terracotta Army and the First Emperor,” establishing itself as a cultural center.
What you see
The interior features a single Latin cross nave with a grand classical design. Imposing fluted white columns support an entablature with denticles, creating the effect of a monumental Greek temple. The basilica contains twelve chapels arranged six on each side. Artworks include paintings by Santafede, Girolamo Imparato, Bernardino Siciliano, Francesco de Mura, and Fedele Fischetti. The sacristy displays paintings by Nicola Cacciapuoti.
