The solemn inauguration took place on May 8, 1897, attended by Emperor William II and Empress Augusta Victoria. Pope Pius X elevated the church to Minor Basilica status on December 3, 1906. From February 1, 2005, it became the official headquarters of the military ordinariate for the Federal Government.
