Barbican Centre

A landmark performing arts venue and cultural hub in the City of London, the Barbican Centre opened in 1982 as a gift to the nation. It remains a principal home for major orchestras and the Royal Shakespeare Company.

At a glance

The Barbican Centre is a multifaceted arts institution within the Barbican Estate. It houses two world-class orchestras, hosts theatre, film, music and visual art, and includes a library, restaurants and conservatory. The building exemplifies brutalist architecture, a style it shares with the Southbank Centre.

History

Built at a cost of £161 million (equivalent to £574 million in 2025), the centre was conceived as the City of London’s gift to the nation. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened it to the public on 3 March 1982.

In 2001, the Royal Shakespeare Company departed the venue. The company returned in 2013, reestablishing the Barbican as its London home.

What you see

The Barbican Centre’s brutalist design defines its visual character—raw concrete masses, geometric forms, and integrated urban planning dominate the structure. The Concert Hall anchors the complex, while galleries, theatres and public spaces create a unified cultural campus within the larger Barbican Estate.

Cultural significance

The centre is home to the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra, making it a vital venue for classical music in Britain. As a member of the Global Cultural Districts Network, it represents contemporary approaches to urban cultural programming. Its architecture, controversial yet celebrated, reflects postwar ideals about public culture and community spaces.
