The Baradla Domica cave system extends more than 25.5 km through the Aggtelek Karst, with the Domica Cave comprising 5.3 km of its expanse. History
Traces of human occupation reach back to the Neolithic period, though the cave’s formal written record begins in 1549. Joseph Sartory conducted the first documented survey in 1794, when the system’s known extent was merely 1.8 km. The engineer Imre Vass expanded exploration significantly in 1825, tracing an additional 5 km along the main branch and producing the first accurate map and detailed description, published in both Hungarian and German in 1831.
Tourist infrastructure arrived early: the first walking paths were constructed in 1806 to facilitate safe passage. The Red Lake entrances were established in 1890, followed by intensive exploration campaigns between 1927 and 1928 that further expanded the known passages.
