History
The cornerstone was laid in 1962. Six years later, the theatre was inaugurated on 1968, with the opening ceremony chaired by Acharya Atre and attended by India’s then home minister, Yashwantrao Chavan. Writer and humorist Pu. La. Deshpande was instrumental in conceiving the theatre, which the Pune Municipal Corporation has owned and operated since its establishment.
