Kolkata Museum of Modern Art
A major contemporary art museum planned for New Town, designed by Herzog & de Meuron and set to establish a significant cultural landmark in India’s eastern metropolis.
At a glance
KMOMA will be a state-of-the-art museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art, located in the growing New Town development zone east of central Kolkata. The project represents a significant investment in cultural infrastructure for West Bengal.
History
The foundation stone was laid by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in November 2013, marking the official launch of this ambitious cultural initiative. The museum emerged from the state government’s vision to create world-class arts facilities in the New Town township.
What you see
Herzog & de Meuron, the internationally acclaimed Swiss architectural firm renowned for designing the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing, created the design. The museum will occupy a 40,000-square-metre (10-acre) site. The architects’ signature approach to material expression and spatial innovation informs the contemporary design.
Cultural significance
The museum promises to strengthen Kolkata’s position as a cultural centre and provide essential space for modern Indian and international contemporary art. It reflects the state government’s commitment to developing New Town as a modern cultural hub beyond traditional commercial and residential functions.
