History
Emerita Augusta was founded in 25 BC by the Emperor Augustus to settle discharged soldiers from two legions—the Legio V Alaudae and Legio X Gemina—who had served in the Cantabrian Wars. The city grew rapidly as a colonial center.
The amphitheatre was constructed seventeen years after the city’s founding and completed in 8 BC. It functioned as a venue for public entertainment: gladiatorial combats, hunts, and battles between men and beasts entertained the population of this prosperous Roman colony.

The amphitheatre survives today in ruins, its original grandeur fragmentary but still evident. The structure was engineered to accommodate large crowds witnessing the violent spectacles characteristic of Roman entertainment culture.
